## Between visibility and resistance

### **Alexander Kaye – Sculpture, Installation, Performance**

**Alexander Kaye’s practice** is grounded in situations where bodies, materials and structures are held in deliberate imbalance. Whether through anti-motion performance scores, modular constructions or light-based wall works, his pieces operate as systems that are activated by pressure rather than expression. What appears precise and minimal is never neutral. It is calibrated to test how much tension a form, or a body, can hold before it shifts.

Across sculptural installations, Kaye introduces layers that obstruct easy access. Light is filtered, faces are embedded or partially concealed, frameworks are tightened with rods, threads or braces. These interventions do not decorate the object. They function as barriers that slow perception and force a more physical reading of space. The work insists on distance, even as it pulls the viewer closer.

Performance plays a key role in this logic. In Kaye’s grid-based body works, movement is restricted by external frames, producing gestures that feel strained, contained, almost mechanical. The body becomes another material within the system, subject to the same rules of compression, repetition and resistance as steel, wood or plaster.

Rather than offering symbolic narratives, Kaye’s work stays committed to structure. The tension between what is visible and what is withheld remains unresolved. This refusal of clarity is not an absence, but a position. His installations function as quiet sites of confrontation, where perception itself is placed under load.
