ENESS built its reputation turning public space into a playground for adults who forgot how to play. HP*ATM pushes that instinct toward something closer to interrogation. The machine still looks like a toy. What it asks of the people who step up to it is not.

The work stands inside Automation Bias, presented during Illuminate Adelaide, alongside pieces by James Dodd, EJ Son, Marian Sandberg and Stelarc.

"HP*ATM uses playful techniques to critique AI being used to gain psychological insight on its users. Automated products have been marketed with humanising names for some time, Alexa and Siri among them." — Nimrod Weis, ENESS

The body itself, an AI-generated form finished by hand into soft inflatable folds, sits inside the shell of a retired ATM.

A tiny Noren curtain marks it open for business. A vintage telephone handset waits in the interaction sequence like a prop nobody quite trusts anymore.

HP*ATM never resolves the discomfort of being read by a machine, it just makes the reading feel like a carnival game you agreed to play.
